My name is Anka...I've been creating in various art forms for as long as I can remember. I blame my hippie artist parents (who met back in the 70s in art school), particularly my mother who introduced me to finger painting and the magical Stevie Nicks.
My formal career in photography started back in 2005 when I attended a 2 year trade school. I then enrolled at The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City where I majored in photography and minored in fine arts (particularly printmaking) for 4 years. I graduated in 2011 with my BFA degree.
That's about the time I met legendary photographer Deborah Turbeville...she changed my life. In a matter of a few short years, we became very close. I worked as her head photo assistant, retoucher and fine art printer. We traveled the world together as I helped her shoot for various magazines such as Vogue Italia, L'Uomo Vogue, GQ and Harper's Bazaar...it was exhausting and amazing all at the same time. When Deborah passed in 2013, I became the Head Archivist of her art estate.
I ultimately left a few years later when my husband and I decided to hit the road and follow our musical passion, in the form of a band called The Long Losts. So that brings us to current day, where I utilize all my various backgrounds and create fine art lifestyle and gothic portraiture. I try not to limit myself, and whatever inspiration comes to me I run with it...
